Chlorhexidine is a chemically synthesized disinfectant with broad-spectrum antiseptic action, active toward Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It is used extensively in mouthwashes, hospital cleansers (included in hospital antiseptic disinfectant formularies in 4% solution), dermatological solutions (e.g., topical use in wounds in 0.05% solution), veterinary field, etc. It is not classified as a biocide.
According to the hospital disinfectant handbook of the VDA Region, its mechanism of action is as follows:
- BACTERIOSTATIC ACTION: disorganization of the outer membrane resulting in disruption of the osmotic balance of the bacterial cell and loss of cytoplasmic material.
- BACTERICIDE ACTION: coagulation and precipitation of cytoplasmic proteins.
